Spa Body Treatments

Achieve healthy, glowing skin with spa treatments for the body

Besides incorporating a healthy diet and exercise regimen into your life, there are other ways to get your body ready for swimsuit season. When you walk into a spa, it’s easy to be seduced by the many relaxing and rejuvenating services that are offered. What you may not realize, however, is that these rejuvenating treatments not only help you to unwind after a long week, but they’re good for your skin, too!

SKIN outlines common body treatments—body peels, body wraps and body scrubs—and explains which ones are best for your body type, as well as how they can help whip your skin into tip-top shape!

Body Peels

Like the face, the rest of your skin also shows signs of aging via wrinkles, fine lines and sun spots. Indulging in a body peel can help reverse and rejuvenate such signs, especially on your chest, neck, legs and arms—areas that are often neglected. Additionally, a body peel can minimize the appearance of sun-damaged skin and even out skin tone.

Sometimes referred to as a body resurfacing treatment, a body peel often produces an immediate improvement in the skin’s appearance. When applied, a body peel will penetrate the skin to improve its texture by removing dead skin cells and excess oil buildup, smoothing the appearance of stretch marks, softening dry or rough patches, and encouraging the growth of new skin cells.

Because body peels have a slightly stronger concentration than the chemical peels used on the face, spas will typically recommend a series of peel sessions on various sections of the body, as it is safer and more effective. Whether administered in a doctor’s office or a medical spa, make sure the skin care professional tests the body peel solution on a section of your skin to ensure you are not allergic. Also, stay out of the sun after completing the treatment, as new surface cells will be tender and more susceptible to sunburn.

Body Scrubs

Sometimes using just a cleanser on your skin is not always enough to remove excess oil and dirt that builds up on the skin’s surface and causes clogged pores and blemishes. By using a body scrub on a weekly basis, you will notice a significant difference in the way your skin looks and feels. Body scrubs remove dead skin cells; allow body creams and lotions to absorb into the skin more effectively; promote hydration; and exfoliate. Natural ingredients like alpha hydroxy acid, aloe vera, jojoba oil and lavender play an essential part in hydrating and cleansing the skin.

Body Wraps

A body wrap helps with weight loss, hydration and detoxification. By using ingredients like sea salt, mud, seaweed and algae, a body wrap helps to draw out toxins in the body. The benefits of this process include improving the texture and appearance of the skin; detoxifying and contouring the body; tightening and softening the skin; and shedding unwanted inches. Hydrating elements like essential oils, shea butter and lotions are also applied to help moisturize the skin.

Like the name suggests, your body is literally wrapped using a soft cloth after the solution has been applied to your skin. The results are almost immediate; however, a body wrap is not a permanent fix for weight loss, as toxins will eventually resurface.
